Day 0

Depart your hometown and take an overnight flight across the Atlantic. Enjoy in-flight entertainment and meal service as you travel to start your vacation.

Day 1 – Dublin Arrival and Highlights

  • Arrive in  Dublin and our hotel near St. Stephens Green a location central to research, shopping, and sightseeing.
  • Depending on your time of arrival you may wish to:
  • The  day is yours for exploring this historic city with its deep history, grand shops, and incredible restaurants.  
  • You may wish to visit Dublinia Museum there are two grand ancient historic Cathedrals near the museum, Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Both formerly Catholic and now are Church of Ireland
  • Learn about the exciting opportunities that await you during your time in Ireland at our orientation and welcome reception with the group.   Light hors d’oeuvres will be served at the reception. Then spend the rest of the evening free so you may dine independently.
  • OVERNIGHT: STEPHEN’S GREEN HOTEL, DUBLIN

 

Day 2 – GUIDED RESEARCH AT NATIONAL ARCHIVES or HOP ON HOP OFF DUBLIN

  • A nice walk to the National Archives and Genealogical Office for a day of guided research. 
  • If your cup of tea is not research enjoy the entire day at leisure in Dublin, where you can choose from a wide variety of pursuits. Use your Hop on Hop off pass to visit a number of places. Also using your vouchers you may either visit the Guinness Storehouse or Old Jameson Distillery for a tour and sample of the finished product. There are also plenty of museums of Irish interest such as the National Museum, the National Gallery or the Writers Museum. You may also want to shop along Nassau Street, the pedestrianized Grafton Street or Henry Street. Tonight, you are free to sample one of the many restaurants or pubs scattered throughout Dublin.   
  • Note: For those who have a problem walking a taxi or bus will be needed.

Day 3 – CLASS, GUIDED RESEARCH AT NATIONAL ARCHIVES,  AND KILMAINHAM GAOL

  • This morning we will have a class in a meeting room in the Hotel after which we shall continue our research at the National Archives  
  • Following lunch we will take a short bus ride to Kilmainham Gaol for a guided tour, a great place to learn Irish history

Day 4 – BOYNE VALLEY VISITOR CENTRE & HILL OF TARA

  • This morning drive into County Meath and stop at the Boyne Valley Visitor Centre to learn about the nearby passage tombs of Newgrange and Knowth constructed over 5,000 years ago. Learn about why they were built and how they were used as calendars. Walk through a full-scale reconstruction of the chamber at Newgrange. Next visit the actual tomb of Knowth, which is similar in size to New Grange and is surrounded by 18 smaller satellite mounds. Continue on to visit the Hill of Tara, seat of the High Kings of Ireland, which was at the height of its power in the early centuries after Christ. It is also the site of a passage-tomb dating from the late Stone Age. All that remains today are huge circles of earthworks which are impressive by their size and age. Return to Dublin, where the balance of the day is at leisure.

Day 5 – DUBLIN AT LEISURE

  • Today is free to sightsee independently in Dublin. You can continue to use your Hop On Hop Off Pass to get around the city. Perhaps you would like to explore Temple Bar or visit some of the traditional pubs. Or maybe you would to visit Trinity College to see the Book of Kells, an 8th century illuminated manuscript of the gospels. You could also tour Dublin Castle, which was the seat of power and government for many centuries. In the evening, you are free to dine on your own.

Day 6 –  GLENDALOUGH

  • After breakfast drive across the Wicklow Mountains to see the 6th century monastic ruins of Glendalough, where the peacefulness of the valley conjures up the spirit of the monks. The Visitor Centre explains how St. Kevin founded this settlement at a time when Christianity was burgeoning throughout Ireland. Today the monks have long gone, leaving the ruins of numerous churches and a round tower. Next stop in the Avoca Woollen Mills in Kilmacanogue. This company produces high-quality woolens and also has a good café. Then head back to Dublin, where the balance of the day is free for individual pursuits and dining.
  • OVERNIGHT: STEPHEN’S GREEN HOTEL, DUBLIN

 

Day 7 – KILKENNY CASTLE

  • Today travel through Naas and Kildare, which is prime horse-breeding country. Continue south through pleasant farmland to the marketing town of Carlow and on to Kilkenny. Upon arrival visit Kilkenny Castle, home of the Butlers, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde. The castle was first built in 1192 and added to over the centuries. Restored to 1830’s splendor, it houses wonderful paintings and furniture. After your tour, return to Dublin in time for a farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant.
  • DINNER & OVERNIGHT: STEPHEN’S GREEN HOTEL, DUBLIN

 

Day 8 – PREARRANGED TOUR OR RETURN TO UNITED STATES

  • Continue with previously arranged tours, or.
  • All too soon, your Irish vacation has come to its final day. Transfer to Dublin Airport in good time to check in for your flight. You may do some last minute shopping at the duty free stores before boarding your aircraft and flying across the Atlantic Ocean back to the United States.

2.) Newgrange passage tomb in County Meath ( Poss. Daytrip out of Dublin Between Dublin and Belfast)

3.) Glendalough (possible day trip out of Dublin)

4.) The Rock of Cashel(South of Dublin)

5.) Cobh (Emigration Museum) Titanic Docked there. Used to be

6.) Glendalough (possible day trip out of Dublin)

7.) Adare village near limerick (Palitine German settlements, very touristy)

  • Mobility: All of our tours involve walking and require our guests to board and disembark our vehicles several time a day making this tour unsuitable for those with reduced mobility.
